The Type I and Type III lines are the handle the spiral fits.
A mechanical lithotripsy device used to fragment large common bile duct stones that cannot be removed intact during ERCP.
According to the manufacturer mechanical lithotripsy is indicated for stones larger than about 1.5 cm, or in cases with several stones that will not pass the papilla. The purpose is breaking stones in the bile and pancreatic ducts, and the indication is biliary lithotripsy.
Lithotripsy cannot be guaranteed: if the stone is too hard the basket can break under the force applied to it, and then the stone and the torn basket have to be removed surgically. Lithotripsy is stopped at once when it becomes clear that the stone will not break, and the handle is turned in 360 degree increments with a 5 to 10 second wait between them.
