Intragastric Balloon

A saline-filled silicone balloon placed endoscopically in the stomach to occupy gastric volume as part of a structured weight-loss programme.

In which cases?

  • Obesity managed without surgery, inside a supervised programme with dietitian follow-up.
  • A high-risk patient who has to lose weight before bariatric surgery.
  • A patient who has not reached the target with medical treatment and diet alone.

What makes it different?

  • Placed and removed through the gastroscope, so there is no incision and nothing is resected.
  • Fill volume is set at placement, so tolerance can be traded against effect for that patient.
  • Smooth silicone shell with no exposed edge against the gastric mucosa.
  • Placed at an endoscopy list under sedation, so no theatre slot and no general anaesthesia are booked.
