Biliary Self-Expanding Metal Stent (SEMS)

Single-wire-design self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) made of Nitinol for relieving malignant strictures in the biliary tree.

In which cases?

  • Malignant biliary obstruction palliated in a patient who will not be operated on.
  • A stricture that needs to stay open longer than a plastic stent stays patent.
  • A duct already stented with plastic, where the stent is upgraded at the exchange.
  • A stricture where a partially covered stent is wanted because tumour ingrowth is expected.

What makes it different?

  • Nitinol expands at body temperature and holds a steady radial force on the stricture.
  • Woven from one wire, so there is no cut end sitting against the duct wall.
  • Tantalum radiopaque markers, so both stent ends are placed under fluoroscopy.
  • 10 mm diameter in 40 to 100 mm lengths, uncovered or partially covered.
