Filled with about 5 ml saline, plunger pushed to the 2 ml mark to inflate the balloon

A 5 ml loss of resistance syringe with a balloon indicator: the balloon is inflated before the needle advances and deflates when the tip reaches the epidural space, so the moment is seen as well as felt.

In which cases?

  • Locating the epidural space where the loss of resistance is the endpoint.
  • A difficult back, where the tactile endpoint is hard to read alone.
  • Teaching the technique, where a second person has to see the same endpoint.

What makes it different?

  • The balloon deflating is a visible endpoint, so the operator is not the only person reading it.
  • A stated balloon pressure deviation of 3 kPa.
  • Fits the epidural needle you already use, after the stylet is removed.

Frequently asked questions

How is the LOR indicator syringe primed?

Four steps: check the syringe is intact and fill it with about 5 ml saline, remove the stylet and connect the syringe tightly to the epidural needle, push the plunger to the 2 ml mark so the balloon inflates, then advance the needle slowly without moving backward. The balloon deflating promptly is the endpoint.

What is the volume and the order code?

One volume, 5 ml, with the order code ILOR005. The pressure held in the balloon has a deviation of 3 kPa.
